What Pediatric Dentistry Covers

Children's Dentistry in a Family Office

Pediatric dentistry is the preventive and restorative care of teeth from the first baby tooth through the teens.

We see children alongside their parents and siblings. Your child keeps one chart and one team from the first checkup into adulthood, and when orthodontics or Invisalign make sense, treatment happens in the same familiar office.

What a Children's Checkup Includes

  • Exam of teeth, gums, bite and jaw growth
  • X-rays only when they aid diagnosis
  • A fluoride review, including drinking water
  • Brushing and diet coaching for parent and child
From First Tooth to Teens

What We Watch For at Each Age

Every stage brings different risks. Here is what each visit focuses on.

  1. First tooth to age 3

    A Healthy Start

A first visit by the first birthday. We check how teeth are erupting, look for bottle decay and show you how to clean them.

  2. Ages 3 to 6

    Habits and Spacing

All 20 baby teeth are usually in. We watch thumb and pacifier habits, spacing and early cavities between teeth.

  3. Ages 6 to 12

    New Molars, New Bite

Permanent molars arrive, the right time for sealants. We track crowding and bite changes.

  4. Teens

    Alignment and Protection

Orthodontic options, custom sports guards and wisdom teeth monitoring.

What to Expect

Your Child's First Visit

A pleasant first visit builds trust for every visit after it, so we keep it relaxed. Children are encouraged to ask questions and tell us what worries them.

  1. Meet the Team

Your child gets to know us and the room before anything starts.

  2. History and Exam

We review dental and medical history, then check teeth, gums and bite.

  3. Clean and Explain

A gentle cleaning when your child is ready, with each step explained in kid-friendly words.

  4. Plan Together

We go over what we found and a home care routine for you and your child.

A tip for parentsKeep the build-up low key and skip words such as "needle" or "drill." We explain each step positively.

Comfort First

Calm Care for Nervous Kids

Many children feel uneasy at the dentist. Our team slows down, explains as we go and lets a child set the pace.

  • The Wand Advanced Anesthesia

A computer-controlled system that delivers numbing at a slow, steady rate.

  • Sedation Dentistry for Children

Conscious sedation for children who need help relaxing, always discussed with you first.

  • Children With Special Needs

Comprehensive care, with visits shaped around your child's needs.

Beyond Cavities

Breathing, Sleep and a Growing Jaw

How a child breathes and sleeps is tied to how the jaw develops. Dr. Silva completed the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Master Track and wrote Breathe Right: The Link Between Nutrition, Airway and Getting a Good Night's Sleep.

At checkups we look for signs that breathing may be affecting growth, and explain the next step if we see them.

Signs worth mentioning at a visit

  • Regular snoring or restless sleep
  • Breathing through the mouth by day
  • Teeth grinding at night
  • A narrow arch or crowded teeth

Parents Ask

Pediatric Dentistry Questions

What parents ask us most.

When should my child first see a dentist?

Plan the first visit when the first tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday. It is a short visit to check how teeth are coming in and show you how to clean them.

Does a cavity in a baby tooth need a filling?

Usually, yes. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth and help children chew and speak, and some stay until about age 12. Decay is an infection that spreads, so we treat it while it is small.

How is a family dentist different from a pediatric specialist?

Pediatric dentists complete two to three years of specialty training after dental school. Our dentists provide children's care as part of family dentistry, so the whole family is seen in one office. If your child needs a specialist, we explain why and talk through the options.

Is thumb sucking harmful to my child's teeth?

Most children stop on their own without lasting effects. Habits that continue as permanent teeth arrive can crowd teeth or change the bite, and a habit appliance can help a child stop.

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

Find the tooth and hold it by the crown, not the root. If you can, place it back in the socket and have your child bite on clean gauze; if not, keep it in milk. Contact our office right away, because a quick response improves the odds of saving it.
