The Treatment

How Dermaplaning Works

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation. A sterile surgical blade is drawn across the skin at a shallow angle in short, light strokes.

Each stroke lifts the outer layer of dead skin cells along with vellus hair, the fine peach fuzz that traps oil and makeup. What is left is a smoother surface that reflects light more evenly, which is why the face looks brighter as soon as the treatment ends.

Because nothing is injected and no device heats the skin, dermaplaning works well on its own as a refresh. It also prepares the skin for what comes next: serums and moisturizers absorb better, and foundation goes on without catching on texture or fine hair.

  • What it removesBuilt-up dead skin cells on the surface, and the vellus hair across the cheeks, jawline, upper lip and forehead.
  • What it does not doIt does not reach the deeper layers where collagen is made, so it will not change scars or deep lines. That is the job of microneedling.
  • How you feelA light scraping sensation, much like a soft brush. No numbing is needed.
  • How oftenMost patients return every 3 to 4 weeks to keep skin smooth.
Who It Is For

Skin Concerns Dermaplaning Addresses

Dermaplaning suits most skin types that need surface-level renewal rather than deep repair. These are the concerns patients most often bring to us.

  • Dull, Tired-Looking Skin

Built-up dead cells scatter light. Clearing them restores an even, healthy glow.

  • Uneven, Rough Texture

A smoother surface feels softer to the touch and looks more refined.

  • Peach Fuzz

Fine vellus hair can hold onto oil and makeup. Dermaplaning removes it gently.

  • Skincare That Sits on Top

When products stop absorbing well, clearing the surface helps them reach the skin.

  • Makeup That Will Not Sit Flat

Foundation catches on texture and fine hair. A smooth base fixes that.

  • Mild Discoloration

Surface exfoliation can soften the look of light pigment and shallow marks over a series of visits.

When to wait

If you have an active acne breakout, a rosacea flare, a sunburn or any open or irritated skin, we will hold off until it settles. For deeper concerns such as acne scars or lost firmness, we will talk with you about microneedling instead.

Choosing a Treatment

Dermaplaning vs. Microneedling

We offer both treatments in our office, and patients often ask which one they need. They work at different depths, so the answer depends on what you want to change.

How it works
A sterile blade lifts dead skin cells and vellus hair from the surface.
Suited to
Dullness, rough texture, peach fuzz, a smoother makeup base.
When you see it
Right after the session.
Schedule
One session, repeated every 3 to 4 weeks.
Recovery
Minimal. Most patients return to their day.

Not sure which fits your skin? We will look at your concerns together and recommend one, the other, or a plan that uses both.

What to Expect

Your Visit, Step by Step

  1. Skin Review

We look at your skin and ask about your routine, including any retinoids or exfoliating acids, so the treatment fits your goals.

  2. Cleanse and Prep

Your face is cleansed and dried so the blade glides over a clean, oil-free surface.

  3. Dermaplaning

Short, feather-light strokes clear dead skin and fine hair from each area of the face while you lie back and relax.

  4. Soothe and Protect

We finish with a calming moisturizer and sunscreen, and set a time for your next session.

Results and Aftercare

What Happens After Treatment

The difference shows as soon as you sit up. Simple aftercare keeps the fresh surface calm and protected until your next visit.

  1. Right away

    Smooth and Bright

Skin feels soft and looks more even. Makeup can go on the same day for most patients.

  2. The first few days

    Keep It Simple

    • Gentle cleanser and moisturizer
    • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen
    • Pause scrubs, peels and strong acids
  3. 3 to 4 weeks

    Time to Refresh

New cells and fine hair build back up at the skin's natural pace. This is when most patients book their next session.

FAQ

Dermaplaning Questions, Answered

Have a question that is not here? Ask us when you book and we will walk you through it.

How much does dermaplaning cost?

The price depends on whether dermaplaning is booked on its own or paired with another treatment such as microneedling. We confirm your price before anything begins, so there are no surprises at checkout.

Can dermaplaning be done with a peel?

Dermaplaning is often paired with a peel, because clearing the surface layer lets the peel spread more evenly. Whether a combination suits your skin, and how far apart the treatments should be, is something we decide with you at your visit.

What should I put on my face before dermaplaning?

Nothing special. We cleanse your skin in the office before the blade touches it. If you use retinoids or exfoliating acids, mention them when you book, since these are usually paused for a few days beforehand.

Will my peach fuzz grow back thicker?

No. Dermaplaning cuts fine vellus hair at the surface and does not change the follicle, so it returns with the same soft texture and color. Most patients find it grows back over about 3 to 4 weeks, which lines up with the usual time between sessions.

How often should I get dermaplaning?

Most patients come back every 3 to 4 weeks. That interval matches the skin's natural turnover, so each session clears the cells and fine hair that have built up since the last one.

Is there downtime after dermaplaning?

Downtime is minimal, and most patients go straight back to their day. We send you home with simple aftercare: a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and daily sunscreen.
