The words “root canal” can be terrifying to people, especially those who have never undergone one themselves. However, thanks to technology root canal procedures have changed considerably, and today we are here to dispel some of the top root canal myths!
The number one myth is that root canal treatments are extremely painful. FALSE – root canals are performed in order to alleviate pain. Modern anesthesia allows for a significant reduction in pain, making it similar to getting a filling.
The second myth says pain will immediately cease following the root canal. While this is false, it should be known that the patient will feel significant improvement immediately following the treatment. It is completely normal for the tooth and surrounding are to feel sensitive, however the pain should disappear soon after. A patient can take pain killers to help out with pain.
Another myth reveals that a root canal “kills” the tooth being treated. This is also false as the treatment cleans and disinfects the inside of a tooth allowing it to heal.
