June is a conflicting month for dentists everywhere. It is National Dairy Month – and we are all aware that dairy products are essential for keeping your tooth enamel strong. But June is also National Candy Month, and sugary food and drinks are terrible for your mouth, wearing away your enamel. Keeping your tooth enamel strong is vital for a healthy mouth and a winning smile. Here are a few steps to take to keep the barrier healthy and strong.
- Limit Sugary Food and Drinks. Sorry National Candy Month – bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar from food and drinks. They make acids which and soften and wear away your enamel. Eating or drinking a lot of sugary food and drinks can wear down your enamel over time, which leaves your teeth vulnerable to decay. If you must eat sugary foods or drinks, it’s imperative that you rinse your mouth as soon as possible, keeping the sugar from sticking to your teeth.
- Eat Foods that Protect Enamel. Foods rich in calcium counters acids in your mouth that cause decay! It helps keep your bones and teeth strong. Milk and cheese are great foods for strengthening your tooth enamel. If you do not eat dairy, look for foods with calcium added.
- Get Regular Checkups! You should see your dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. Your dentist can spot signs of trouble and potential cavities before too much damage is done!
