This summer have fun in the sun and stay happy by following these simple tips to keep up with your dental hygiene, all while helping to prevent tooth decay and maintain a healthy smile!
Drinking Water:
Drinking water not only keeps you hydrated during the hot summer days, but it also helps to rinse your mouth, washing away and plaque-causing bacteria, and can also improve your breath. Furthermore, tap water is the better alternative to bottled water, as tap water is known to strengthen enamel, making your teeth more resistant to decay.
Cut Down on the Sugary Drinks and Snacks:
Lemonade, juice, soda, and sweet tea are all sugary drinks whose components wear down enamel, making your teeth more prone to decay as well as periodontal disease. Sugary drinks should be considered a treat, and water should be the alternative offered instead of them.
The same goes for snacks. Stocking a healthy kitchen is the first step in ensuring that your children are eating what is best for their teeth. Fresh and local fruits and vegetables are healthy options that will not wear the enamel on your family’s teeth and are great alternatives to the sugary cookies and candy that will cause harm.
Travel Sized Dental Care:
As always, brushing and flossing your teeth regularly are very important to maintaining that healthy smile, but with vacations and summer camps, it might be more difficult to keep up with your usual routine. Be sure to stock up on travel sized toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss to have with you on the go, as this is a convenient way to stay on top of your dental hygiene during the busy days of summer!
