How to Avoid Bad Breath
Studies show that 50% of adults have had bad breath, or halitosis, at some point in their life. We get it, bad breath happens! We have all been there. But what actually causes bad breath, and how can you prevent it from happening? Keep reading to find out.
What Causes Bad Breath?
There are numerous reasons why you could be experiencing dragon breath. Most causes are harmless, but bad breath can also be a sign of something more serious.
Bacteria
The hundreds of types of bacteria in your mouth can cause bad breath. Your mouth naturally acts as a hothouse that allows bacteria to grow. So when you eat, bacteria feeds on the food left in your mouth and leaves a less foul-smelling odor behind.
Dry Mouth
Thirsty? Your mouth might not be producing enough saliva. Saliva is important because it works around the clock to clean out your mouth. If you don’t produce enough saliva, you mouth isn’t being cleaned as much as it should. You can get dry mouth from certain medications, salivary gland problems, or simply from breathing through your mouth.
Gum Disease
If you have bad breath that just won’t go away or you have a constant bad taste in your mouth, these are both signs of advanced gum disease, which is caused by plaque buildup.
Food
What you eat affects the air your exhale! No matter how good or not good smelling it can be.
Smoking & Tobacco
Smoking stains your teeth, gives you bad breath, and puts you at risk for cancer. Tobacco reduces your ability to taste foods and irritates gum tissues. It also puts you at a higher risk of gum disease!
Medical Conditions
Mouth infections can cause bad breath. However, if your dentist has ruled out other causes and you brush and floss daily, your bad breath could be result of another problem, such as a sinus condition, gastric reflux, diabetes, liver or kidney disease. In this case, it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider.
How Do I Keep Bad Breath Away?
Brush & Floss
Here is the most simple answer – brush and floss twice a day to get rid of any bacteria that is causing bad breath.
Mouthwash
Over-the-counter mouthwashes can help kill the bacteria that is making your breath stink. Although, this is only a temporary solution. The longer you wait to brush and floss, the more likely your breath is going smell!
Clean Your Dentures
If you wear removable dentures, take them out at night and clean them thoroughly before using them again the next morning.
Keep the Saliva Flowing
To get more saliva moving in your mouth, try eating healthy foods that require a lot of chewing, such as apples or carrots. You can also try chewing sugar-free gum or sugar-free candies. Your dentist might also recommend artificial saliva.
Quit Smoking
Giving up this dangerous habit is good for your body in more ways than one! Not only will you have better breath, but you will also have a better quality of life.
